Iqbal on Guru Nanak

Butkada phir baad muddat ke magar raushan hua,
Noor-e-Ibrahim se aazaar ka ghar raushan hua!
Phir uthi aakhir sada tawhid ki Punjab se,
Hind ko ik mard-e-kamil ne jagaya khwab se!

(After and age, once again the temple became radiant;
Aazar’s house shone with the glory of Abraham.
Once again, the call of God’s unity arose from Punjab
From its dream Hind was awakened by a Perfect man.)

Iqbal brings Guru Nanak centre stage. The world is dark, all great teachings have been forgotten and migrated to distant land, and caste is crushing the oppressed. All of a sudden history repeates itself. Giving the analogy of Prophet Abraham’s father, Aazaar (a consummmate artist, maker of idols) in whose house Abraham, the Father of Wahdaniyat(One God) was born. Guru Nanak was thus sent to earth to spread this very Wahdaniyat. The soil of Punjab gave call for Unity and India was awakened from its deep slumber by a man who is Kamil or complete, the perfect Man, Guru Nanak.

ਸਿਤਾਰੋਂ ਸੇ ਆਗੇ ਜਹਾਂ ਔਰ ਭੀ ਹੈਂ

ਤੂ ਸ਼ਾਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਪਰਵਾਜ਼ ਹੈ ਕਾਮ ਤੇਰਾ
ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਮਨੇ ਆਸਮਾਂ ਔਰ ਭੀ ਹੈਂ
ਇਸ ਰੋਜ਼-ਓ-ਸ਼ਬ ਮੇਂ ਉਲਝਕਰ ਨ ਰਿਹ ਜਾ
ਕਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ-ਓ-ਮਕਾਂ ਔਰ ਭੀ ਹੈਂ
ਸਿਤਾਰੋਂ ਸੇ ਆਗੇ ਜਹਾਂ ਔਰ ਭੀ ਹੈਂ
ਅਭੀ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਕੇ ਇਮਤਹਾਂ ਔਰ ਭੀ ਹੈਂ

ਸ਼ਾਹੀਂ — ਬਾਜ਼, ਰੋਜ਼-ਓ-ਸ਼ਬ –ਦਿਨ-ਰਾਤ

You are a falcon, it is your nature to fly
For you there are other skies beyond this sky
Don’t let the web of dawns and dusks enmesh you
For you have other lives,other goal to pursue
Beyond these starts are worlds yet to unearth
There are more trials of love to test your worth.
